Tech giant Microsoft is one of the many companies embracing AI. So it's perhaps ironic that Microsoft's co-founder – the multi-billionaire Bill Gates – has given a warning over its potential dangers. Speaking in London this week, Gates called AI a'wonderful' technology that can save humans from climate change and disease. But he warned that it needs to be used'by people with good intent', as it could be used by criminals'engaged in cyber attacks or political interference'. Gates, one of the 10 richest humans in the world, said: 'The defence has to be smarter than the offence.

On my desk right now, sitting beside my ultra-modern gaming PC, there is a strange device resembling the spaceship control panel from a 1970s sci-fi movie. It has no keyboard, no monitor, just several neat lines of coloured switches below a cascade of flashing lights. If you thought the recent spate of retro video game consoles such as the Mini SNES and the Mega Drive Mini was a surprising development in tech nostalgia, meet the PiDP-10, a 2:3 scale replica of the PDP-10 mainframe computer first launched by the Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in 1966. Designed and built by an international group of computer enthusiasts known as Obsolescence Guaranteed, it is a thing of beauty. Oscar Vermeulen, a Dutch economist and lifelong computer collector, wanted to build a single replica of a PDP-8 mainframe, a machine he had been obsessed with since childhood.

Apple has acquired Xnor.ai, a Seattle startup specializing in low-power, edge-based artificial intelligence tools, sources with knowledge of the deal told GeekWire. Speaking on condition of anonymity, sources said Apple paid an amount similar to what was paid for Turi, in the range of $200 million. Xnor.ai didn't immediately respond to our inquiries, while Apple emailed us its standard response on questions about acquisitions: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans." When we visited Xnor.ai's office in Seattle's Fremont neighborhood this morning, a move was clearly in progress -- presumably to Apple's Seattle offices. The arrangement suggests that Xnor's AI-enabled image recognition tools could well become standard features in future iPhones and webcams.

The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (abbreviated AI2) is a research institute founded by late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. The institute seeks to achieve scientific breakthroughs by constructing AI systems with reasoning, learning, and reading capabilities.[1] Oren Etzioni was appointed by Paul Allen in September 2013 to direct the research at the institute.[2][3][4] In 2018, the institute partnered with the University of Washington to explore deep learning artificial intelligence designed to predict how dogs would respond to stimulus. Researchers used over 20,000 frames of video to train an AI to predict movements and learn other dog behavior.[15]

"They were trying to run their operation from that physical board," says Ted Schmitt, principal business development manager for conservation technology at Vulcan, the Seattle-based philanthropic tech company founded by Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen (who died on October 15), which partnered with the park to help it move to the company's digital system, called EarthRanger, in April. "They all know that poaching goes up during a full moon, for obvious reasons," says Schmitt. "But what they don't know, and they all expect, is that there are patterns like that latent in the data that they just can't pull out. That's the promise of machine learning…it's going to let them be proactive." The machine learning is still in early stages of development, but some analytic tools are already in use. The world's largest plane, Stratolaunch, has a completed a key taxi test ahead of taking to the skies for the first time. The gigantic plane, which is the vision of late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, is believed to be close to its first flight after reaching a record-breaking 90mph during medium-speed taxi testing at the Mojave Air & Space Port. Allen died Monday in Seattle from complications of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, aged 65. The massive plane has a wingspan longer than a football field and comes equipped with two cockpits, 28 wheels and six engines normally used to power 747 jumbo jets. Eventually it will be used to transport rockets carrying satellites and even a newly revealed manned space plane into the Earth's upper atmosphere, where they will blast off into space.

Paul Allen was the self-described "idea man," the shy son of librarians. Bill Gates was the business-oriented partner who brought the ideas to life. And in 1975, when Mr. Allen was 22 and Gates was 19, the friends formed a company that became known as Microsoft and unleashed a personal-computer revolution that made both men fabulously wealthy. Mr. Allen left the company after only eight years, amid a bout with Hodgkin's disease and a deteriorating friendship with Gates.
